The picturesque Tamar River has created a fertile valley of beuatiful and rich contrasts as it flows from Launceston to the sea. The magnificent Tamar river meanders its way through scenic pastures, orchards, high yielding vineyards and forests to the Bass Strait.
The Tamar river is Australia's biggest tidal navigable river.
There are interesting towns and beautiful natural attractions throughout the valley on both sides of the river and there isn't a better way to see the diversity of northern Tasmania.
Starting with a visit to the Grindelwald shopping village in Aspect Tamar Valley Resort, then follow the scenic route along the west side of the river and discover the wineries and admire the work of local craftspeople and artists.
The Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre at Beaconsfield is a must see attraction with over 30 visitor activated displays. At Beauty Point take a scenic cruise up the historic West Arm or Low Head.
Cross the Batman Bridge to historic George Town (Australia's oldest town) and Low Head where you'll find Australia's oldest operating pilot station and Maritime Museum at the Tamar mouth. Learn about the area's history on the George Town Heritage Trail.
